David Hendrik Chassé (born March 18, 1765 in Tiel in Gelderland , † May 2, 1849 in Breda ), baron , was a Dutch general .

career

Chassé entered the Dutch military service as a cadet in 1775 , became a lieutenant in 1781 and a captain in 1787 . After the suppression of the Patriot Party (1787), to which he was affiliated, he fled to France , joined the local army and did not return to Holland until 1795 with Jean-Charles Pichegru .

In 1796 he took part in the campaign in Germany under Herman Willem Daendels , later distinguished himself in the siege of Würzburg and in 1799 in the Anglo-Russian landing in North Holland, and became Colonel in 1803 and Général de brigade in 1806 .

He distinguished himself in the Spanish War from 1812 to 1813 and earned the nickname "General Bayonet" because of his preference for bayonet attacks. Louis Bonaparte awarded him the title of baron in 1810 . In 1814, during the first Allied campaign in France, he advanced to Général de division and on February 27, 1814, he offered strong resistance to a strong Prussian force near Bar sur Aube .

After the peace he joined the Dutch army as a lieutenant general and took part in the battle of Waterloo . After the Second Peace of Paris, Chassé was at the head of the fourth major military command in Antwerp . He became famous in the Belgian Revolution for the brutal bombardment of Antwerp (October 27, 1830) and for the persistent defense of the citadel during the siege of Antwerp at the end of 1832. He was eventually promoted to general of the infantry. He was handed over to the French as a hostage , but returned to his fatherland after the preliminary treaty of May 12, 1833.

He then lived at his headquarters in Thiel in Geldern , took final retirement in 1840 and died on May 2, 1849 in Breda.

His sister Johanna Cornelia, who was three years older than him, married the later Brigadier General Heinrich Friedrich August von Hadeln , who fell on September 1, 1809 as a Westphalian division commander during the siege of Girona . From this marriage came the son Heinrich Hellmuth von Hadeln , who was to become general and war minister in the Duchy of Nassau .
