Hieronymus Simons van Alphen (also: Hieronymus Simonsz van Alphen ; * May 23, 1665 in Hanau ; † November 7, 1742 in Utrecht ) was a German Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of the merchant and mayor Hieronymus Simons van Alphen and his wife Catharina van der Cruyse came from a Dutch family that had settled in Germany. After attending school in his hometown, he studied at the University of Leiden in 1681 , where he attended the theological faculty under Friedrich Spanheim (1632–1701) and Christopher Wittichius (1625–1687). He continued his studies five years later in 1686 at the University of Franeker with Johannes van der Waeijen (1639–1701), Hermann Alexander Roëll and Campegius Vitringa the Elder . In 1687 he became pastor in Warmond , a village near Leiden, and in 1691 pastor in Zutphen . In 1693 he went to Amsterdam in the same capacity .

After his appointment on November 5, 1714 at the University of Utrecht as a professor of theology and his doctorate there on January 11, 1715 as a doctor of theology took up the position on February 25, 1715. In connection with this, he was also assigned a pastorate at the Utrecht Cathedral . As an orthodox dogmatist and exegete, he had earned respect in his time. He also donated a number of scholarships for Hungarian and German students. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht Academy and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1717/18 and 1733/34 . After his death, Arnold Drakenborch gave him the commemorative speech on March 25, 1743.

Alphen was married three times. His first marriage to Judith van der Maerschen (1692–1696) remained childless. Her second marriage to Martina Biler (1698–1719), daughter of a merchant in Amsterdam, had two sons and two daughters. The son Hieronymus van Alphen (* May 7, 1700; † April 22, 1758) became a pastor in Amsterdam and Leeuwarden and Johann von Alphen (1710–1750) became a lawyer in Utrecht. His third marriage was with Cornelia van den Togt (1721–1730), widow of the city council and mayor of Utrecht Caspar van Roijen. The marriage also remained childless.
