Contract partner

On March 29, 1698, a 14-page alliance treaty was drawn up in Copenhagen between the two countries . After the death of the Danish King Christian V , his son Friedrich IV was crowned king on August 25, 1699. Soon afterwards he was looking for allies for another war against Sweden . The aim of the new Danish king was to regain the provinces of Scania , Blekinge and Halland , which had been lost during the Skåne War . Due to the change of the throne in Denmark, Frederick IV sent his brother-in-law Christian Detlev von Reventlow on a secret mission to Dresden to persuade August the Strong , Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, to form an even closer alliance against the King of Sweden.

August was looking for allies for the planned war against the inexperienced and very young King Karl XII. and Stanislaus I. Leszczyński , his Polish opponent in the battle for the Polish crown. While the Danes and Saxons were negotiating, August concluded a defensive alliance with the Swedes. The negotiations between the Danes and the Saxons remained hidden from the Swedes.

The two monarchs pledged to support each other in the fight against Sweden. In addition, the importance of another alliance partner was noted by both sides. To this end, talks began in autumn with the Russian Tsar Peter I. There had already been talks with the Russian Tsar a year earlier within the framework of his Grand Embassy , but the Tsar had to leave for Moscow to put down the Second Strelitzen Uprising. The results of the negotiations culminated in the Treaty of Copenhagen, in which the Russian tsar joined the alliance.

The contract only lasted a year. After the landing at Humlebæk and the Traventhal peace treaty concluded between Sweden and Denmark-Norway , the alliance between Denmark-Norway was terminated.
