John Bartram
John Bartram (born March 23, 1699 in Darby , Pennsylvania , † September 22, 1777 in Philadelphia , Penn.) Was an American botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Bartram ".
He was the father of William Bartram .
Live and act
Bartram was born into a Quaker family. He collected many plants on his extensive travels through the eastern United States from Lake Ontario in the north to Florida in the south and the Ohio River in the west. Many of his finds were sent to collectors in Europe.
He founded Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia and was one of the co-founders of the American Philosophical Society with Benjamin Franklin in 1742 .
King George III appointed him royal botanist in 1765 - a post he held until his death.
Honor taxon
The moss genus Bartramia was named after him.
