The apple mosses ( Bartramia ) are a genus of deciduous mosses from the Bartramiaceae family . It is named after John Bartram , an American botanist (1699–1777).

features

The mosses form loose to dense, often bluish green cushions. The plants can be up to 15 centimeters tall, are usually forked and rhizoid-tomentose below. The mostly long, narrow leaves, sawn at the edge, often have a half-sheathed to sheathed base. The leaf cells are rectangular to linear in the lower leaf area, thin-walled and smooth, in the upper part rectangular to square, thick-walled and nipple-like. As with the other mosses of the Bartramiaceae family , the spore capsules are rounded (called apple moss).

The genus is cosmopolitan, but mainly in the tropics.
