The Bartramiaceae are a family of mosses and form a separate order Bartramiales .

features

The mosses usually form dense cushions that are felted by rhizoids , which are often bluish green and difficult to wet with water. The leaflets are usually narrowly lanceolate. The leaf margin is almost always serrated. The cells of the leaf blade are square to rectangular. A midrib always exists.

The antheridia stands are surrounded by bracts and resemble a flower.

The capsule stalk ( seta ) is usually upright. The capsules of these mosses are noticeably round. This is why the mosses have their German name apple mosses . The peristome is double.

The worldwide widespread family forms its own order with ten genera and around 375 species, which are divided into three subfamilies:

  • Subfamily Conostomoideae
    • Conostomum , 7 species, southern hemisphere temperate to Antarctic

    • Anacolia , 7 species, worldwide
    • Bartramia , 60 species worldwide, mostly tropical
    • Flowersia , 4 species, Central America, North-East Africa, Himalayas
    • Leiomela , 13 species, almost only neotropical
    • Neosharpiella , 2 species, Central and South America, Lesotho
