Philonotis ( spring moss ) is a genus of deciduous moss from the family Bartramiaceae . The name Philonotis comes from the Greek philos = friend and notis = wetness, moisture.
features
The small to often quite strong mosses form loose to dense cushioned lawns. The upright stems can be up to 15 centimeters in size. Fertile stems are often branched into thin side branches like whorls. The leaves are broad to narrowly lanceolate and usually shorter or longer pointed, the edges are serrated by nipples. The lamina cells are oblong and rectangular and mostly nipple at the upper or lower end of the cell.
The spore capsule on the usually very long, upright seta is approximately spherical, furrowed when empty.
