The lime spring moss ( Philonotis calcarea ) is a moss from the Bartramiaceae family , which can be recognized in its almost spherical capsules.
It is a very strong species with up to 10 cm long stems and approx. 4 cm long capsule stems . The trunks form dense lawns in calcareous swamps or in wet locations near calcareous springs, which are tomentose in the lower area of rhizoids . In Eurasia and North America the moss is quite common in limestone areas, otherwise it is rather rare.
The lime spring moss is distinguished from the other species of the genus by its strong growth and clearly one-sided leaves. The leaf margin is rolled up in the lower area and sharply double-sawn.
