Philipp Bruch (born February 11, 1781 in Zweibrücken , † February 11, 1847 ) was a German pharmacist and bryologist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Bruch ".

Life

Philipp Bruch was born in Zweibrücken in the Palatinate . His father was the pharmacist Johann Christian Bruch. The ornithologist Carl Friedrich Bruch was his brother. Philipp Bruch first learned in a pharmacy in Mainz and then studied in Marburg and Paris. At the age of 21, after the death of his father, he took over his father's pharmacy in Zweibrücken. His interest in botany awakened an encounter with the scientist Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch , who was working on a description of the German and Swiss flora . He was particularly interested in mosses and worked with Wilhelm Philipp Schimper and Wilhelm Theodor Gümbel on the six-volume work Bryologia europaea , a monograph on European mosses. Some first descriptions of mosses from the genus Orthotrichum come from him.
