Earlier times in Indonesia

Yusuf was born as the nephew of King Gowas XIV Sultan Alauddin and named Muhammad Yusuf by him . He later married his cousin , daughter of Sultan Alauddin, and at the age of eighteen went to Bantam , where he met Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa . In 1644 he made a pilgrimage to Mecca for the Hajj , spent several years there and studied with various Islamic scholars. When Yusuf left the Arabian Peninsula in 1664, the war between Makassar and the United East India Company (VOC) was just beginning and he was unable to return. Instead he went to the Bantam on Java , where he was received by the Sultan Ageng. Yusuf married the sultan's daughter and became a religious judge and personal advisor to the sultan. He spent about 16 years there until 1680, when Sultan Ageng fought against his VOC-backed son, Sultan Haji. When Sultan Ageng was defeated by the VOC in 1682, Sheikh Yusuf continued to fight until he was captured and exiled in Sri Lanka in September 1684 .

Time in exile in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, Sheikh Yusuf remained active in spreading Islam, so that he had hundreds of students, mostly South Indian, including one of India's well-known Islamic scholars, Sheikh Ibrahim ibn Mi'an. Since Sheikh Yusuf was still in contact with his followers in Indonesia through pilgrims passing by in Sri Lanka, he was finally brought into exile by the Dutch in South Africa in July 1693.

Time in exile in South Africa

Sheikh Yusuf also taught Islam in South Africa and again had many followers and students there until he died on May 23, 1699. The day of his death is honored today by his descendants as a day of remembrance. The small town in which he lived was named Macassar after his birthplace . The former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela honored him as "one of the best African sons".
