Sanctus Seraphin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sanctus Seraphin ( Santo Serafin (o) * 1699 - differing 1665 or 1668 - in Udine ; † 1776 - differing (around 1748) or (around) 1758- in Venice ) was an Italian violin maker.

Seraphin was influenced by the violin making art of the Tyrolean Jakob Stainer and the Cremonese master Nicola Amati (whose pupil he may have been). From around 1710 he lived and worked in Venice and established himself as one of the most successful violin makers in the city. In the 1740s he gave up his own workshop. Today there are still around 300 instruments from his workshop.
