Georg Philipp August von Roth (born October 8 . Jul / 19th October  1783 greg. In Tartu ; † February 15 jul. / 27. February  1817 greg. ) Was a Baltic German clergyman, writer , censor and university lecturer.

Life

Georg Philipp August von Roth was the son of Johann Philipp Roth , who had been pastor in Kanepi since 1780 , and Beata Katharina Seefels. He studied theology at the University of Tartu from 1802 to 1803 and spent the years 1803-1806 at a German university. After returning to Estonia, he was first tutor before becoming the second Estonian lecturer at the University of Tartu in 1810, succeeding Friedrich David Lenz . In contrast to his predecessor, his official title was no longer "Lector for Estonian and Finnish", but was exclusively "Lector of the Estonian language." At the same time, he performed the duties of a censor for Estonian scripts.

Act

Roth gained cultural and historical importance through his work on the weekly newspaper Tarto maa rahva Näddali-Leht , which his father founded in 1806 together with his brother-in-law Gustav Adolph Oldekop . However, the publication of the newspaper was short-lived, as the paper was banned after 41 issues after being denounced by the St. Petersburg censorship authorities. He was also the author of an Estonian textbook that he used in his classes.
