Samuel Andreae

Samuel Andreae (* 1640 in Danzig ; † January 6, 1699 in Marburg ) was a German Reformed theologian.

Live and act

Andreae studied from 1656 at the University of Heidelberg , where she was a student of Johann Heinrich Hottinger the Elder. Ä. and Friedrich Spanheim . After two years he moved to the University of Groningen , where he studied with Jakob Alting (1618–1679) and Samuel Maresius (1599–1673).

After successfully completing his studies, Andreae went on a grand tour to and through England. When he came back from it, he accepted a position at the high school in Herborn . In 1665 he took over a lectureship in Greek language and philosophy there. In 1671 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD .

In 1674 Andreae accepted a position at the University of Marburg and worked there as a professor of eloquence and history. Two years later he also took over the ministry at this university.

Andreae is regarded as a representative of the ideas of Johannes Coccejus (Coccejanism) and René Descartes ( Cartesianism ) and in this capacity he was in opposition to the theologians Johann Rudolf Zwinger ( Basel ), Johannes Musaeus ( Jena ) and Hector Gottfried Masius ( Copenhagen ).
