Johann Christian Seidel

Johann Christian Seidel (born February 13, 1699 in Hof (Saale) ; † June 18, 1773 ibid) was a German Protestant theologian and astronomer .

Life

The son of the hospital preacher Christian Philipp Seidel († 1709) received his first training from his father and private tutors . At the age of nine he went to the gymnasium in Hof and later learned in Heilsbronn . In 1718 he moved to the University of Halle , where he was a student of Christian Wolff , August Hermann Francke , Paul Anton , Johann Heinrich Michaelis and Joachim Lange . In 1712 he became a private tutor in Lichtenberg in Upper Franconia and in 1725 a teacher of rhetoric , poetics and physics at the high school in Bayreuth .

In 1731 he became pastor in Selb , where he built an observatory. In 1737 he became superintendent in Hof, and was associated with the grammar school professor of theology and inspector of the grammar school there. In that capacity he worked until the end of his life.
