Pierre Robert (* around 1618 in Louvres ; † December 30, 1699 in Paris ) was a French composer and conductor of the Baroque period.

Life

Pierre Robert, who came from a middle-class Parisian family, was trained as a choirboy at the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral . In addition to music, he studied theology and was ordained a priest. He had his first job as Kapellmeister from 1648 at the Cathedral of Senlis , two years later he was Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Chartres . From 1653 to 1663, Pierre Robert succeeded Valentin de Bournonville as Kapellmeister at Notre-Dame de Paris.

From 1663 he was employed as "sous-maître et compositeur" at the "Chapelle Royale" and from 1672 after the death of Thomas Gobert until 1683 he was "compositeur de la chambre du roi". In 1683 Robert left the royal chapel with a high pension and lucrative benefices , but occasionally contributed compositions.

For more than 20 years, Pierre Robert, alternating with Henri Dumont , was responsible for the musical design of the daily masses for King Louis XIV. Together with Lully and Dumont, he is considered the creator of “Grands Motets”. His most important works are the 24 double-choir “Grands Motets” from 1684, which roughly correspond to Lully's style , but come closer to the Italian forms in the elevation motets .
