Association of North German Universities

The Association of North German Universities (VNU) is an association of the universities of Bremen , Greifswald , Hamburg , Kiel , Lübeck , Lüneburg , Oldenburg and Rostock founded in 1994 with the aim of jointly developing and implementing evaluation procedures for quality assurance and quality development of teaching and studies . In particular, the individual subjects are to be jointly evaluated, thereby creating common standards.

The University of Groningen in the Netherlands is involved in the network as an external cooperation partner in order to have internationally recognized comparative values.

When the Association of North German Universities was founded in 1994, the main task of the network was defined as the joint implementation of evaluation procedures for subjects. In this way, the member universities from five federal states reacted to the public demands that arose at the beginning of the 1990s for more transparency and quality control in study and teaching. During the conception and implementation of the evaluation process, specific standards and criteria were developed that were based on international experience in quality assurance. In addition, the association developed the online self-assessment , which was designed under the direction of Lutz F. Hornke in order to develop admission criteria and strategies as well as to optimize examination administration. The Northern Association Self Assessment was switched off in 2014. In the course of the introduction of tiered study programs as part of the Bologna Process , the universities involved are also working together in this area.

In 2008, the presidents and rectors agreed on a reorientation of the cooperation. Instead of the evaluation process, the project-related work came to the fore, especially with regard to improving the quality of studies and teaching. At the moment, the Association of North German Universities is increasingly developing into a higher education policy forum that aims to promote dialogue with the science administration, among other things. In addition, the members of the Northern Association are in close contact with each other about their quality assurance systems and research initiatives.

The association's spokesperson is Johanna Eleonore Weber , Rector of the University of Greifswald. She was unanimously elected as the new spokesperson for three years at the meeting of the presidents and rectors of the Association of North German Universities in Hamburg on January 29, 2014. Weber replaced Babette Simon, former president of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, at the head of the association.

The office of the Association of North German Universities is located at the university of the incumbent spokesperson, currently at the University of Greifswald.
