The German JKA Karate Association (DJKB for short) was founded in 1993 by Shihan Hideo Ochi (9th Dan ) as a German branch of the Japan Karate Association . Ochi has been working as a karate teacher in Germany since 1970 and is now chief instructor of the DJKB. The president of the DJKB is Josef Kröll from Munich .

The trigger for the establishment of the DJKB and the associated split from the German Karate Association (DKV) were disagreements among the members regarding the interpretation of the traditional values of Shōtōkan karate . The DJKB founders around Ochi no longer wanted to support a further direction of karate as a purely competitive and competitive sport, as in their opinion promoted by the DKV. The training in karateka must rather include traditional training in kihon , kata and kumite in equal measure, and a one-sided focus on kumite must be avoided.

Today the DJKB is an independent association of individual members , not organized in the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) . The association has around 21,000 members across Germany.

Competition point system

The tradition of the DJKB is reflected in competitions in that it is still fought on a single point ( Japanese 一 本 ippon ). The ideal of winning with a single hit is adapted to reality by also awarding half points ( Japanese 技 あ り wazaari ). The karate-typical concentration in the fight, to end the fight with the first successful attack, remains as a basis. The point system also favors kicks to the head, for which there is usually an ippon. This is to ensure that the performance of foot techniques in competition is encouraged and not atrophied.

In the DKV, however, the system has been modified over time so that several points are "collected". Yuko = 1 point for all fist techniques, Waazari = 2 points for foot techniques to the body and Ippon = 3 points for foot techniques to the head.
