Instituut voor Nederlandse Geschiedenis

The Instituut voor Nederlandse Geschiedenis (abbreviated ING ; German  Institute for Dutch History ) is a research facility of the Nederlandse Organizatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO). The institute is located in The Hague in the building of the Royal Library of the Netherlands .

The institute was founded in 1902 as the Commissie voor de 's Rijks Geschiedkundige Publicatien (Commission for Historical Publications of the Empire). It supports historical research into Dutch history by publishing references, research reports, databases and reference works. Around 450 works have been published since 1902. This includes:

  • the biographical lexicon of the Netherlands ( Biografisch Woordenboek van Nederland ),
  • the digital women's lexicon of the Netherlands ( Digitaal Vrouwenlexicon van Nederland ),
  • the digital bibliography of Dutch history ( Digitale Bibliografie van de Nederlandse Geschiedenis ),
  • Johan Rudolf Thorbecke's correspondence .

The book editions are available in Dutch bookshops. Nowadays the ING publishes mainly online on the institute's website; the information available there is free of charge.
