Willem Anne baron Schimmelpenninck van der Oye (born January 6, 1800 in Doesburg ( Gelderland ), † December 12, 1872 in Voorst , Netherlands ) was a Dutch politician .

origin

Schimmelpenninck was a member of the noble house of the same name . His parents were Ahasveros Jacob Schimmelpenninck van Der Oye (1768–1810) and his wife Henriëtte Ahasvera Charlotte Juliana Alexandrine van Pallandt (1773–1855)

Life

He was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General and Minister of the Interior from 1841 to 1846. In the meantime, he also held the post of Foreign Minister (1843) under the reign of King Wilhelm II of Orange-Nassau . who advocated government reforms. From 1847 to 1853 he was royal commissioner or agent of the king for the province of Gelderland. His friendship with Johan Rudolf Thorbecke also stems from this time . However, when Thorbecke became Dutch Prime Minister in his first term, he decided that Schimmelpenninck was too conservative to remain royal commissioner. At the end of his first cabinet he dismissed Schimmelpenninck - against the wishes of the king - from his office. This also ended the mutual friendship. After Schimmelpenninck had held high positions in the judiciary and had returned to the Second Chamber, he became its President in 1858. As a confidante of the king, he later became a member of the Senate .

As a major in a rifle club , Schimmelpenninck was awarded the Military Wilhelms Order on February 7, 1844. Two years later, in 1846, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion . He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Frederick by King Friedrich Wilhelm Carl von Württemberg .
