Christoph Albert (Chris) van der Klaauw (born August 13, 1924 in Leiden , † March 16, 2005 in The Hague ) was a Dutch diplomat and politician .

Life

Chris van der Klaauw studied history at the University of Leiden until April 25, 1950. From 1959 to 1963 he was Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to NATO and the OECD in Paris , from 1970 to January 1, 1975 Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and from January 1, 1975 to October 1977 Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva . From 1977 to 1981 he was Foreign Minister in the government of Prime Minister Dries van Agt . He was a member of the liberal party VVD .

He then returned to the diplomatic service with posts as ambassador to Belgium from January 1982 to August 1, 1986 and ambassador to Portugal from August 1, 1986 to September 1, 1989. Van der Klaauw was known as a friendly person, but he was was not a skilled politician, which he himself admitted.
