Henricus Antonius Franciscus Maria Oliva (Hans) van Mierlo (born August 18, 1931 in Breda , † March 11, 2010 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch politician . He was co-founder of the left-liberal party Democrats 66 (D66) and became its central figure.

Life

Van Mierlo studied law at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (Nijmegen) and received his doctorate there in 1960. From 1960 to 1967 he worked as a journalist for the liberal newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad in Amsterdam , first in the Inlands editorial team, then as head of the opinion section.

In 1966 he was instrumental in founding the social liberal Democrats 66 party and became its first chairman. From 1967 to 1977 and from 1986 to 1994 he was a member of the Dutch parliament and from 1967 to 1974 also chairman of the Democrats 66. From 1983 to 1986 he was a member of the Senate, the first chamber of the Staten-Generaal . He was also a member of the Netherlands- Suriname Development Cooperation Commission and the Defense Advisory Committee.

From September 11, 1981 to November 4, 1982 van Mierlo was Minister of Defense in the Dries van Agt cabinet and from August 22, 1994 to August 3, 1998 Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the Wim Kok cabinet .

In 1998 he was given the honorary rank of Minister of State .

Van Mierlo held numerous managerial positions, particularly in literary and cultural organizations. He was married to the Dutch writer Connie Palmen for the third time in 2009 , with whom he had been in a relationship for almost 12 years. He has a son from his first marriage and two daughters from his second marriage. In a diary published in 2011 in the Netherlands, his last wife described the last year of living together with the politician, who was already severely ill.
