Enno Johann Heinrich Tjaden (1722–1781)

Enno Johann Heinrich Tjaden (also Tiaden , born July 18, 1722 in Aurich ; † April 3, 1781 ibid) was an East Frisian lawyer and science historian .

Life

Enno Tjaden came from a family from which many theologians emerged. His father was a pedellist at the princely office in Aurich. Tjaden attended school in Aurich (presumably the Ulricianum ) and then studied law from 1741 to 1744 at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . After completing his studies, he was a lawyer in Aurich from 1745, later a criminal and assistant counselor.

During his studies he began to collect material on the scholars of East Friesland. Later, Johann Conrad Freese and Tileman Dothias Wiarda helped him . From 1773 he wrote on his scholarly biography. All scholars who were born in East Friesland were recorded, sorted by date of death, beginning with the 16th century and ending in 1752. In it, he corrected many of the mistakes made by his predecessors and relied on sources that have since been largely lost.

Tjaden's work The learned East Friesland came out in three volumes. He himself no longer experienced the pressure. The work was moved to the Borgeest printing house between 1785 and 1790 . The editors were his assistants Freese and Wiarda and his sons.

Today his work is viewed critically. So it says in the Biographical Dictionary of Ostfriesland : ... actually only a small and quite arbitrary selection ... or ... provincial narrowness Tjadens, who is never left except his Jena studies from Aurich ... . Nevertheless, his performance was not to be underestimated, as the lexicon emphasizes. He relied only on a few notes by Ehrenreich Gerhard Coldewey and otherwise used many original sources that have now been lost, which also helped him to correct mistakes by others.

family

Tjaden was married to Gesche Christine Saathof (* 1730 - 23 December 1799) since July 24, 1750 . She was the daughter of Christian Ludolf Saathoff and Anna Christine Stürenburg . The couple had the following children:
