A pedell is an organizational assistant at public institutions, such as courts, schools and especially at universities.

Origin of the term

The term pedell is traced back to the late Middle High German pedel , pedele or bedelle , which means something like "caretaker of a [college] school", as well as to the early New High German bedell or pedell , which means "court messenger " (a university), "university messenger " or "University servant" means. The term originated from the equivalent Middle Latin pedellus or bedellus , which was probably the Latinization of a Germanic word, because the Old High German word bitil can be traced back to the 11th century; Furthermore, the Old English bedul as well as the Old Norse biðill - like the Old High German expression - roughly stands for "supplicant". In the course of time it may also have been mixed with Büttel .

Functions and tasks

In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period, the members of a university were not subject to local institutions, but had their own jurisdiction . The pedell held the executive . He was a court usher and responsible for the order and compliance with university laws. He brought to unbotsame student charges before the Rector and was responsible for the execution of academic penalties. The detention center was also part of his area of responsibility. Usually, the pedell was also responsible for organizing the academic funerals .

For the students, the pedals were unwelcome watchdogs who spoiled a lot of fun. The common nickname for the pedell was " poodle ".

The office of the pedell was associated with a certain prestige until the 16th century, but then increasingly lost its reputation and is now only available by name. The job title still exists today - but with a changed job profile, for example among the employees of the property management of the University of Trier .

The Pedellhaus in Ingolstadt

In Ingolstadt , the medieval pedell house now houses a local museum . Lucia of Syracuse is seen as the patron saint of pedels .

Well-known pedels included Wilhelm Eder , George Edwards , Louis Elsevier , Matthys Elsevier , Johann Friedrich Payer and Jakob Schmid .
