Erwin W. Spahn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erwin Wendelin Spahn (born January 15, 1898 in Vienna ; † June 3, 1941 in Dachau concentration camp ) was an Austrian writer and librettist.

Life

Spahn was born Erwin Grünspan in Vienna, lived in Vienna 2, Obere Donaustraße 59 until 1938, and worked there as a writer and librettist. a. for Hermann Leopoldi and Ernst Arnold ; he wrote well over a hundred texts for composers such as Edmund Eysler , Willy Engel-Berger , Leopold Kraus-Elka and others; a large part of them were Viennese songs.

Spahn's lyrics appealed to both the intellect and the feeling of the listener. His songs, which were created in collaboration with Hermann Leopoldi, show clear time references, such as the ironic Ich bin an incorrigible optimist (1929, co-author is Robert Katscher ) and the local patriotic I stay in Vienna (1932). Ironically, in the milieu of the student associations, who were the most violent representatives of racist anti-Semitism, the sentimental - memorable song on Das Töchterlein vom Herr'n Pedell (1929) is set; later the couplets become more thoughtful: For 32 groschen ... (1933), from which world disgust and longing for harmony speak; the waltz song Landsleit ' , composed after 1934 , in which the audience is asked not to “politicize” any more, but to remain peaceful, up to the bitter confession at the end of the civil war , poor, we are now from 1935.

The songs with Ernst Arnold, whose spectrum ranges from the old Viennese idyll ( Der Herr von Schubert , 1927), the touching song on dog loyalty (1927) and the mother's heart (1928), to songs of praise to celebrities such as the popular actor and singer Alexander, are different Girardi ( Our Xand'l , 1927) or the composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1927), to the exotic ( Flower of the East. Chinese Blues , 1927). Turandot and The Woman One Longs for , both in 1927, and overseas dance songs in blues-tempo Pass auf (1926) and Oh Miss Maud (1929) point to literary models . The dog theme is also taken up by the Foxtrot couplet What has Bonzo done again (1929), but this time from the cheerful side. The suggestion was probably the cartoon dog of the same name invented by the Englishman George E. Studdy .

He wrote hit lyrics for Willy Engel-Berger and other composers. They quickly become popular thanks to the performance of well-known dance bands in Austria and Germany. The gramophone record and later the radio also play their part.

Spahn also worked for talkies and revues. He wrote hit texts for Die große Sehnsucht (Germany 1930, director: Stefan Szekély, music: Joe Alex) and for the Viennese revue Achtungkur ! (1930, music: Willy Engel-Berger).

Spahn's texts were interpreted by Austria's first artists: in addition to Hermann Leopoldi and Ernst Arnold, Fritz Imhoff , Jacques Rotter , Walter Simlinger and Ernst Davis. In the "Reich" they were u. a. Presented by Alice Hechy , Max Mensing and Leo Monosson .

Erwin Grünspan, who called himself Erwin Wendelin Spahn by his stage name, was of Jewish descent. After the annexation of Austria by the National Socialists in 1938, Spahn was deported to Sachsenhausen , from there to the Dachau concentration camp , where he died.
