Simon Busuttil

Simon Busuttil (born March 20, 1969 in Attard , Malta ) is a Maltese politician and was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2013 . He is a member of the Maltese Nationalist Party , a member of the Bureau of the European People's Party and sat as MEPs in the Budgetary Control Committee of the European Parliament and its Budget Committee .

Busuttil was also a deputy on the Regional Development Committee and a deputy on the Temporary Committee on the Alleged Use of European States by the CIA for the transportation and illegal detention of prisoners. He was also Vice-Chair of the Delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries and the Arab Maghreb Union (including Libya ) and a member of the delegation to the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.

Career

Simon Busuttil received his Doctorate in Law from the University of Malta in 1994. In 1994 he also obtained an MA in European Studies from the University of Sussex and in 1995 a Magister Juris in International Law from the University of Malta. In 1994 he became a partner in a law firm. Among other things, he worked as a consultant on EU issues; for example in 1996 for the Minister for the Environment of Malta, in 1998 for the Minister for Education and 2003/2004 for the Minister for Foreign Affairs. From 1999 to 2003 Busuttil was head of the EU information center in Malta and during the same period a member of the Malta - EU core negotiating group . From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee.

Public offices

Simon Busuttil was during his studies from 1989 to 1991 chairman of the Christian Democratic Students (SDM) and from 1991 to 1992 student representative in the Senate of the University of Malta . In 1992 he was International Secretary of the National Youth Council (Malta). From 1997 to 1999, Busuttil was General Secretary of the European Movement in Malta. In 1998 he became chairman of the Airport Shopping Association.

In 2012 Busuttil is a member of the following committees and delegations: the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs , the Petitions Committee , the Special Committee against Organized Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering and the Delegation for Relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo . As a deputy, Busuttil is in the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection , in the Delegation for relations with Switzerland and Norway, in the EU-Iceland Joint Parliamentary Committee and in the European Economic Area Joint Parliamentary Committee and in the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean .
