history

The party was founded in 1989 a. a. Founded by André Goustat and Jean Saint-Josse as a hunters' interest group against EU directives that limit hunting times . Goustat was the first party leader and mayor of the small community of Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang in the Dordogne . In the regional elections in 1992, 29 members of the CPNT were elected to the regional councils of 13 regions, ten of them in the southwestern French region of Aquitaine , where Goustat was then vice-president of the regional council. In the 1998 regional elections, the party received 32 seats in 17 regions.

Jean Saint-Josse, Mayor of Coarraze in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department , followed Goustat in 1998 at the top of the party. The CPNT was represented in the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004 , where its six MEPs belonged to the EU-skeptical Europe of Democracies and Differences Group. In the French presidential election in 2002 , Saint-Josse ran for CPNT and came in ninth place with 4.2% of the vote.

Frédéric Nihous represented the party in the 2007 presidential election and received 1.15% of the vote. Nihous was chairman of the CPNT from 2008 to 2016. It has been formally associated with the conservative Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP) since 2012 and with Les Républicains since 2015 . Accordingly, it no longer put up its own presidential candidates, but supported Nicolas Sarkozy in 2012 and François Fillon in 2017 . The party has been led by Eddie Puyjalon since 2016 and had over 8,000 members in 2019. In autumn 2019 it was renamed Le Mouvement de la ruralité .
