Antoine Waechter (born February 11, 1949 in Mulhouse ) is a French politician . He is the founder and chairman of the ecological party Mouvement écologiste indépendant (MEI).

Life

Antoine Waechter began very early to get involved in the protection of nature and animals. He wrote his doctoral thesis on the ethology and ecology of the stone marten . In the early 1970s he was involved in the first political environmental movements. Together with Solange Fernex , he founded Ecologie et Survie , the first environmental party to win mandates in France. He was also a member of the Mouvement écologique , which emerged as a result of René Dumont's candidacy in the 1974 presidential election. When the French green party Les Verts was founded in 1984 , he was one of the party spokesmen from the beginning and shaped the direction of the party significantly. In the presidential election in France in 1988 he was their candidate and won 3.78% of the vote. A year later he was elected both to the city council of his hometown Mulhouse and to the European Parliament, in which, however, he only remained as a member for 2 years.

From the beginning, Antoine Waechter stood for the independence of green politics from other political currents. When the Greens under Dominique Voynet decided in 1994 to enter into alliances with the political left in the first round of majority elections, he left the party and founded the Mouvement écologiste indépendant (MEI). In the following years, however, he did not manage to establish the MEI as an ecological party on a par with the Greens. In the following presidential elections, he did not get the 500 supporter signatures necessary for a candidacy. Only in his home in Elass did he continue to receive greater attention. In the regional elections in 2004, for example, the MEI's list under his leadership in Alsace was able to reach more than 5%. In the 2014 regional elections in France, the MEI in the merged Grand Est region concluded an alliance with the Greens in the first round, in which Antoine Waechter was in second place on the list. His candidacy for the 2017 presidential election failed again due to the lack of supporter signatures.

Antoine Waechter lives in the small Alsatian parish of Fulleren , where he has been a councilor since 2001.
