Dominique Voynet (born November 4, 1958 in Montbéliard ) is a French politician of the Greens ( Les Verts ) and former environment minister. From 2008 to 2014 she was mayor of the city of Montreuil .

Life

Voynet began getting involved in the environmental movement in the late 1970s while studying medicine. She continued to join Amnesty International , the CFDT union , the Front de lutte antimilitariste and the Amis de la Terre . In 1984 she was involved in the founding of the French Greens ( Les Verts ) together with Yves Cochet , Guy Hascoët , Antoine Waechter and others . She completed her medical training as a specialist in emergency medicine and anesthesia at the age of 23.

In 1989 she was elected MEP, but gave up her seat in the European Parliament in 1991 to become spokeswoman for the French Greens. After she was a member of the regional council of Franche-Comté from 1992 to 1994 , she won 3.32 percent of the votes in the first ballot in 1995 as the party's candidate in the French presidential elections.

In 1997 she was elected to the French Assemblée nationale , but renounced her seat in parliament in order to be the first green member of the government to take over the ministry for environmental and spatial planning in the Jospin cabinet . After her resignation in 2001, she became party leader and led the election campaign for the candidate of the Greens in the 2002 presidential election, Noël Mamère , who won five percent of the vote in the first ballot. In 2003 Gilles Lemaire took over her party office. In September 2004 she was elected Senator for the Seine-Saint-Denis department .

In July 2006, she was elected by her party as a candidate for the Greens in the 2007 presidential election and achieved the eighth position out of twelve competitors with 1.57% of the votes cast.

Voynet is the mother of two daughters. The older, Marine Ronzani, was a candidate of the Greens in the Jura department for election to the Assemblée nationale in June 2007.
