Yves Cochet (born February 15, 1946 in Rennes ) is a French politician and member of the Europe Écologie-Les Verts party (Europe Ecology-The Greens). From June 16, 2002 he was a member of the French National Assembly for the 11th arrondissement in Paris . From December 7th 2011 he was a successor member of the European Parliament (7th electoral term until 2014). His seat in the National Assembly will remain vacant until the next election.

Cochet belonged to the Group of the Greens / European Free Alliance . He was a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Delegation for Relations with India . He was a deputy in the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy .

Life

After studying mathematics , Yves Cochet became a research assistant at the Institut national des sciences appliquées (INSA) in Rennes in 1969 and defended his doctoral thesis in mathematics in June 1971. During his university studies he joined the student association Unef and in the 1970s, during the nuclear dispute, the Breton environmental organizations “Bretagne vivante” and “Eaux et rivières de Bretagne”.

In 1973 he continued to join Friends of the Earth and in 1977 founded the organization's local branch in Rennes. He later actively supported the candidacy of the future Environment Minister Brice Lalonde in the presidential elections in 1981 (3.88% of the vote).

In 1984 he was a founding member of the French Greens and a member of the Conseil national inter-régional (national interregional council). 1984 to 1986 and again 1992 to 1997 he was spokesman for the party.

In March 1989 he was elected to the Rennes City Council and in June of the same year a MEP. In 1997 he became a member of the National Assembly of France and its vice-president.

In 2001 he replaced the Minister for Environment and Spatial Planning Dominique Voynet in the Jospin cabinet . In June of the following year he was elected a member of the National Assembly in the 11th constituency of Paris.

On July 18, 2006, he lost the vote to run as the Green candidate for the presidential election in the third ballot against Dominique Voynet .

In 2011 he founded u. a. with the journalist Agnès Sinaï the think tank Institut Momentum , which is dedicated to the ecological transformation in the perspective of a possible collapse of civilization. He has been chairman of the association since 2014.

As part of the Metoo campaign following the Weinstein scandal , it became known that Cochet wrote an immoral text message to an employee of another MP.
