Europe Écologie (EE, Europa Ökologie ) was a French party alliance that ran for the 2009 European elections. It was founded on October 20, 2008 and consisted of the French green party Les Verts , the association of regionalist small parties Fédération Régions et Peuples Solidaires (including in particular the Corsican PNC ) as well as other environmental activists and regionalists who do not belong to the party. The name goes back to a predecessor list of Les Verts, which stood in the 1979 European elections .

history

The initiator of the group was the Franco-German MEP Daniel Cohn-Bendit , who was a member of the European Parliament for the German Alliance 90 / The Greens in the 2004-2009 legislative period. In the 2009 European elections, however, he ran in France. He managed to win several prominent independent candidates for the list, including the globalization critic José Bové , the environmental activist Yannick Jadot and the anti-corruption activist Eva Joly .

Europe Écologie stood in the 2009 European elections as the French representative of the European Green Party . The alliance received a total of 16.28% of the vote and 14 seats, eight of which went to members of the Verts, one to the PNC and five to independent candidates. It was the third most elected list in France, almost level with the Socialist Party (16.48%).

While the Les Verts party was a member of the green European party EGP , the PNC belonged to the European Free Alliance , which includes regional parties. Both European parties form the joint Greens / EFA parliamentary group in the European Parliament, to which all elected members of Europe Ecologie joined.

After the election, Europe Ecologie continued to exist as an electoral alliance and took part in the 2010 French regional elections, in which they achieved 12.2% of the vote and thus achieved the largest gains among all parties. Overall, the number of regional representatives rose from 159 to 263. However, EE failed with the goal of surpassing the Parti Socialiste in some regions and appointing the regional prime minister.

After the regional elections, Daniel Cohn-Bendit in particular pushed for a merger of EE and Les Verts. This was completed on November 13, 2010. The new party is called Europe Écologie-Les Verts , party leader is Cécile Duflot , the previous president of Les Verts.
