Hans August Lücker

Hans August Lücker (born February 21, 1915 in Krümmel (Westerwald) , † December 28, 2007 in Bonn ) was a German politician ( CSU ).

Life and work

Hans August Lücker came from a Rhineland-Palatinate Catholic farming family; he had seven siblings. After graduating from the humanistic grammar school in 1934, Lücker initially worked in agriculture. He later took up a degree in economics and agriculture . During World War II he was a soldier (last rank: lieutenant) and was awarded the Wound Badge, the War Merit Cross and the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class.

After the end of the war, from June 1, 1945 to 1947, he headed the Food Office for Freising and Erding , after which he became director of the Bavarian Chamber of Farmers. In 1949 he moved to the Bavarian Farmers' Association, where he was head of the department for economic and agricultural policy, and later deputy general secretary. He was a co-founder of the first Bavarian Farmers College in Ottobeuren . In 1951 he finally went to the German Farmers' Association , where he worked for Andreas Hermes .

Hans August Lücker was married and had three children. He was buried on January 5, 2008 after a service in the basilica in the Ottobeuren cemetery.

Political party

Lücker had been a member of the CSU since 1947.

MP

Lücker was a member of the German Bundestag from 1953 to 1980. He first represented the constituency of Memmingen , then from 1965 the constituency of Kaufbeuren and finally from 1976 the constituency of Ostallgäu in parliament.

In 1958 he was one of the founders of the European Parliament and its first vice-president and chairman of the Christian-Democratic parliamentary group.

From March 19, 1958 to 1984 he was also a member of the European Parliament , of which he was Vice President from 1976 to 1979. Before that, from February 1970 to November 1975 he was chairman of the Group of the European People's Party , which unites Christian Democratic MPs. In 1976 he was Executive President of the newly founded European People's Party (EPP).

From 1977 to 1984 he was co-chair of the mixed commission made up of the European Parliament and the Spanish Cortes to prepare for the Spanish accession to the EC. He was European Co-President of the Parliamentary Conference EC-Latin America and Co-President for the southern expansion of the EC.

Other engagement

Lücker was committed to reconciliation between England and Germany, especially between Coventry and his adopted home Ottobeuren . He was a co-founder of the Ottobeurer concerts. Ottobeuren made him an honorary citizen .

Hans-August Lücker was Executive President of the German Committee for the Beatification of Robert Schuman .
