Joseph Illerhaus

Joseph Johannes Illerhaus (born January 31, 1903 in Hamborn , † December 22, 1973 in Duisburg ) was a German CDU politician .

Life and work

At the age of 16, Illerhaus, who was a Roman Catholic , left high school without a high school diploma. From 1919 to 1933 he worked first for a cooperative bank and later for a major bank. He then went into business for himself in textile retail. Since 1947 he was chairman (later honorary chairman) of the retail trade association in Duisburg and president of the retail trade association North Rhine. In 1950 he became President of the Federal Association of German Textile Retailers and Vice President of the Duisburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry . He was also Vice President of the Main Association of German Retailers (HDE) and President of the HDE from 1966 to 1969.

Joseph Illerhaus was married to Hilde, née Herberhold († 1940) and his second marriage to Helene, née Stalberg.

politics

Before 1933 Illerhaus belonged to the Windthorstbund , the youth organization of the German Center Party . In 1945 he participated in the founding of the CDU.

Illerhaus was a councilor in Duisburg from 1948 to 1957. He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1953 to 1969. He represented the Rheydt - Mönchengladbach - Viersen constituency (from 1965: Mönchengladbach constituency) in parliament.

From February 27, 1958 to January 21, 1970 Illerhaus was also a member of the European Parliament . From 1959 to 1961 he was chairman of the committee for questions relating to the internal market of the Community. From March 1966 until he left parliament he was chairman of the Christian-Democratic parliamentary group in the European Parliament.

Honors

Joseph Illerhaus received numerous honors including the Great Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1973 he was invested in Rome in the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
