Erik Nielsen

Erik Hersholt Nielsen , DFC , QC , PC (born February 24, 1924 in Regina , Saskatchewan , † September 4, 2008 in Kelowna , British Columbia ) was a Canadian politician. He was one of the brothers of the actor Leslie Nielsen .

Political career

Nielsen was a member of the Yukon Parliament from 1957 and won all re-elections until his resignation in 1987. Under Prime Minister Joe Clark , he became Minister of Public Works. After that government was voted out of office in 1980, he became an opposition leader . He was also from February 19, 1983 to June 11, 1983 interim chairman of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada . When Brian Mulroney was elected head of government in 1984 , he made Nielsen his deputy. Nielsen held this office from 1984 to 1986, and he was Minister of Defense from 1985 to 1986 .

In June 1986, Nielsen resigned after an affair over alleged perks of Minister Sinclair Stevens , and after he became chairman of the National Transportation Agency in January 1987 , he also gave up his seat in parliament . In 1992 he switched to the private sector and became president of a solar technology company .
