Ilkka Olavi Suominen (born April 8, 1939 in Nakkila ) is a Finnish politician of the National Collection Party .

Suominen graduated from school in Pori and then went to London and Reutlingen , among other places , where he was a student at the West German Tanning School . From 1960 worked in various positions in the family business JW Suominen Oy .

Suominen was a member of the Finnish Parliament from 1970 to 1975 and from 1983 to 1994. From 1979 to 1991 he was also chairman of the National Assembly Party. He was speaker of parliament in 1987 and between 1991 and 1994.

When Harri Holkeri was elected Prime Minister of the National Collection Party in 1987 , Suominen was appointed Minister of Commerce and Industry. He held the office until 1991.

In 1994 he ended his parliamentary career and became a board member of the state-owned company Alko . In 1999 he was elected to the European Parliament for one term.

In 2016 he was awarded the Robert Schuman Medal for his European commitment .
