Jo Benkow (2007)

Jo Benkow (actually Josef Elias Benkowitz ; born August 15, 1924 in Trondheim , † May 18, 2013 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian politician of the conservative Høyre party . From 1965 to 1993 he was a member of parliament in Storting , and from 1985 he was President of Parliament. Between 1980 and 1984 he was the chairman of his party.

Life

Benkow was a member of the small Jewish community of Norway and of the Jewish faith and worked as a photographer before entering politics.

In 1942 he had to flee due to persecution in occupied Norway , Sweden and subsequently to Great Britain and Canada, where he served in the Norwegian Air Force . After the war he returned to Norway and took up his profession as a photographer again. From 1949 to 1965 he ran his own photo studio and until 1956 he worked as an editor for the magazine Norsk Fotografisk Tidsskrift . From 1959 to 1967 he sat in the local parliament of Bærum , from 1962 to 1966 also in the Fylkesting of what was then Akershus province .

Storting MP

Benkow moved into the Norwegian national parliament in Storting for the first time in the 1965 general election . There he represented the constituency of Akershus until 1993. He first became a member of the Social Committee, which he remained for three legislative terms until 1977. After the 1977 election , he went to the Judiciary Committee, where he became chairman. In October 1980 Benkow moved to the administrative committee. He went to the Storting election in 1981 in the Foreign and Constitutional Committee, before he went back to the Judiciary Committee in October 1983. A year later he was again part of the Foreign Affairs Committee. During this time, Benkow also served as group leader of the Høyre group.

Party leader and speaker of parliament

After he was the deputy party chairman between 1974 and 1980, he took over the post of chairman of Høyre in 1980. He held the post until 1984.

In the legislative period between 1985 and 1989 he was a member of the Maritime and Fisheries Committee. He was also elected President of Parliament, which he remained for two terms until September 1993. In his last legislative period from 1989 to 1993, he was initially represented on the Defense Committee, before moving to the Social Committee in 1990.

Time after politics

After serving in Parliament, he was visiting professor at Boston University from 1994 to 1996 . He also wrote other books after he published his first book in 1980.

Benkow died in Oslo in May 2013 at the age of 88. He was married to the politician Annelise Høegh (1948–2015).
