René Fasel (born February 6, 1950 in Freiburg im Üechtland , Switzerland) is a Swiss ice hockey official who has been President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) since 1994 and an IOC member since 1995 .

Life

Fasel studied dentistry at the Universities of Freiburg and Bern and graduated in 1977 with a diploma as a dentist. He then practiced in his own practice. In the Swiss Army he reached the rank of captain .

He is married and has four kids.

Athletic career

As a player

At the age of ten, Fasel began playing ice hockey at Friborg-Gottéron . At this club he played in the youth teams from 1960 to 1972. Today he is an honorary member of HC Friborg Gottéron.

As an arbitrator

In 1972 Fasel ended his playing career and acted as a referee until 1982 , where he also made 37 appearances in international matches.

As a functionary

From 1982 to 1985 Fasel was chairman of the referee committee of the Swiss Ice Hockey League before he was elected President of the Swiss Ice Hockey Association in 1985 . In 1986 his international career as a functionary began with membership in the IIHF Council and the IIHF Marketing Committee as well as chairing the IIHF Referees Committee.

In 1992 Fasel became a member of the Swiss Olympic Committee , and in 1994 President of the IIHF to succeed Günther Sabetzki . In this capacity he also became an IOC member in 1995 and in 2002 President of the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations. He also chaired the IOC's Evaluation Commission for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . Fasel has been an elected member of the IOC Executive Board since 2008 and was confirmed for a further 4-year term at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

In September 2012, Fasel was confirmed for his fifth term as IIHF President. There were no opposing candidates. In November 2018, Fasel announced that at the end of his sixth term in 2020 he would no longer be available as chairman of the world ice hockey association.
