Louis Magnus

Louis Magnus (born May 25, 1881 in Kingston , Jamaica , † November 1, 1950 ) was a French figure skater and ice hockey official . Among other things, he was the first French champion in figure skating , as well as the first president of the International Ice Hockey Federation .

Career

Louis Magnus, who was born in Jamaica and moved to France with his family in 1889 , became the first French figure skating champion in 1908 . He defended this title three more times until 1911 and then won the championship in pair skating together with Anita del Monte in 1912.

Magnus, who also showed great interest in ice hockey , organized the founding meeting of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in Paris on May 15, 1908 , of which he became the first president. He held this office until 1912, where he campaigned for a standardization of the rules in ice hockey, since different rules were played around the world.

The trophy, which was created in 1985 and has since been presented to the winner of the ice hockey championship in France, was named in Coupe Magnus in memory of Louis Magnus . The highest French ice hockey league officially bears his name since the 2004/05 season ( Ligue Magnus ).

In 1997 Magnus was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the IIHF, as in 2008 into the Hall of Fame of the French Ice Hockey Federation.
