Gościęcin ( German Kostenthal ) is a village in the powiat Kędzierzyńsko-Kozielski of the Opole Voivodeship in Poland . As a Schulzenamt, it belongs to the rural community Pawłowiczki .

geography

The street village Gościęcin is located in the south of the Opole Voivodeship , about 12 kilometers southwest of the district town of Kędzierzyn-Koźle in the historical region of Upper Silesia .

history

In the course of the German settlement in the east , the village of Kostenthal arose at the beginning of the 13th century on the Cosel - Leobschütz road , which was first mentioned in 1221 as Gossentin . It was exposed under German law and was one of the villages of Leubus provost Kasimir . With the founding deed issued in 1225, Duke Casimir I of Opole granted the German settlers of Kostenthal the same privileges as the citizens of Zülz had. In the possession and tithe register of the diocese of Breslau ( Liber Fundationis Episcopatus Vratislaviensis ) from around 1305, a Schulzenamt and a parish in Kostenthal were mentioned that belonged to the Dean's Office Cosel. German colonists in Kostenthal have been recorded as early as 1225, whose Middle High German dialect, unlike other places in the area, was not Slavicized in the 16th century, which is why the Kostenthaler, Silesian-German dialect has been preserved as a linguistic island .

In a recess of 8 March 1622 cost Thaler farmers-bought for 12,000 dollars their liberation from the drudgery and were assured by the sovereign, the Breslauer Prince Bishop Karl of Austria to continue to be under spiritual jurisdiction, which until the secularization in 1810 remained the case when the Prussian state took over this role. After the citizens of Kostenthal returned to the Roman Catholic faith as a result of the Counter-Reformation , the independent Archipresbyterate Kostenthal was founded around 1730 .

In 1742 Kostenthal and most of Silesia were assigned to Prussia and in 1816 to the district of Cosel . In the 19th century, too, the craft was important for Kostenthal - the many craftsmen had come together in two guilds . There was also a bakery, five butcher shops and five post mills in the village. In 1901/1908 the Frei scholtisei Kostenthal (120 inhabitants in 1895) , which had been independent until then, was incorporated into Kostenthal.

In the referendum in Upper Silesia on March 20, 1921, 1034 votes were cast in Kostenthal to remain with Germany, and 18 votes were in favor of joining Poland. As a result, the village remained in the Weimar Republic .

The Second World War ended for Kostenthal in 1945 when the place was occupied by the Red Army and placed under Polish administration, which gave the place the name Gościęcin . The majority of the German-speaking inhabitants of Kostenthal had fled or were subsequently expelled. In contrast to the surrounding, bilingual villages, no significant German minority could therefore survive. Polish displaced persons from the village of Biłka Szlachecka (today Verchnja Bilka) near Lemberg were resettled in Gościęcin .

From 1945 to 1975 Gościęcin was the capital of its own Gmina .

Attractions

church

On a hill west of the village on the road to Koske stands the scrap wood church of St. Brixen (kościół św. Brykcjusza) from 1661.

The Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (kościół Wniebowzięcia NMP) goes back to a wooden church building that was built by the Cistercians. Stone construction was carried out in the 16th century. Today's early Baroque building with a three-bay nave and two-bay choir closed on three sides was built around the middle of the 17th century. The interior is spanned by a cross vault that rests on composite pilasters. In the arched arcades of the nave there are side chapels and galleries above them behind curved balustrades.

The old wooden bell tower with two bells was replaced by a low stone structure between 1679 and 1687. In 1792 the tower burned down due to a lightning strike and in 1825 it was raised to a height of 41 meters with today's pointed helmet.

The high altar, which was created around 1725 and depicts the Assumption of Mary in a theatrical design, is significant. The lower part is determined by the semi-sculptural figures of the twelve apostles gathered around Mary's deathbed, which look at the upper part of the altar, where the coronation of Mary is richly decorated. In this form, the design is reminiscent of the older high altar of the Neiss Jesuit Church, which may have served as a model.

The stucco was added around 1700. The side altars (around 1730) and the organ façade in Régence style also belong to the rich baroque furnishings . The rest of the furnishings, such as the pulpit, whose basket is decorated with sculptural figures of the church fathers and whose sound cover is decorated with sculptures of the four evangelists and the Salvator , also dates from the 18th century. Opposite the pulpit is a statue of John of Nepomuk in a rococo niche .

In 1945 the building was damaged by artillery fire and restored after the Second World War.

Next to the church is the rectory from 1723 and a rectory from the 19th century.
