Solwodi (abbreviation for " Solidarity with Women in Distress ", dt .: Solidarity with women in need) is an international human rights and aid organization that advises and supports victims of human trafficking , forced prostitution and intimate partner violence .

Organization history

The nun Lea Ackermann from the Community of Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa (White Sisters) founded this organization, which has been active in Germany since 1987, in 1985 in the sex tourism stronghold of Mombasa on the Kenyan coast. The doctor of education was sent to Mombasa by her order leadership to train religious teachers and was confronted with the suffering of prostitutes there. Lea Ackermann suggested to her provincial superior to do something for the women and girls who prostitute themselves because of their poverty, which she welcomed, but could not offer any money for it. So sister Lea wrote 100 letters to relatives and friends in Germany, where they asked for ten marks per donor and month for a women's center that to education and work for the phase out in a dilapidated warehouse, prostitution was built converted .

present

Solwodi Kenya is now an independent non-governmental organization (NGO) with headquarters in Mombasa and 34 different advice centers on the coast and in Western Kenya. In addition to the psychosocial care , health education and legal advice, it is one of the tasks of Solwodi Kenya, to enable women from prostitution vocational training and microcredit grant for start-ups. In addition, Solgidi (Solidarity with Girls in Distress) was created in Mombasa in 2002 for the daughters of prostitutes. These girls are at high risk of being stranded in prostitution too. School attendance is made possible for them by assuming the costs and providing individual support. Solgidi also supports families in particular with food and medicine. According to Sister Lea, around 400 children now benefit from the Solgidi program every year.

In addition, Solwodi has its own agricultural, health and sports projects in Kenya.

Solwodi can still be found in: Romania, Austria, Hungary, Rwanda, Nigeria.

In the Federal Republic of Germany, Solwodi is involved with a Germany association, which has its headquarters in Boppard on the Middle Rhine, and six state associations in Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Berlin, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria for women in emergency situations. The focus is on the care of victims of human trafficking and forced prostitution, but also victims of intimate partner violence as well as women and girls threatened by forced marriage or who have escaped from forced marriage. Traumatized refugee women and their children are also taken in and cared for. There are 19 Solwodi advice centers in Germany: in Aachen , Aalen , Augsburg , Bad Kissingen , Berlin , Bonn , Boppard, Braunschweig , Duisburg , Fulda , Koblenz , Ludwigshafen am Rhein , Mainz , Munich , Oberhausen , Osnabrück , Passau and Regensburg . The employees offer comprehensive, holistic psychosocial support and advice, safe accommodation in seven Solwodi sheltered flats, mediation of legal and medical help and support when returning to their home countries if migrant women want or need to return.

In 2019, 2,619 women from 112 countries turned to one of the 19 German Solwodi counseling centers for the first time.

In order to be able to help effectively, Solwodi Germany is networked with other advice centers and organizations at home and abroad. By February 28, 2020, 1,620 private individuals and organizations had joined the appeal for the introduction of the Nordic model. Since 2013, Solwodi has generated a further 33,600 signatures for the project in its campaign "Put an end to it! No slavery for women in Germany".
