George Hardy (ice hockey coach)

William George Hardy , CM (born February 3, 1895 in Oakwood , Ontario , † August 28, 1979 in Edmonton , Alberta ) was a Canadian ice hockey coach and official.

Career

George Hardy graduated from the University of Toronto . From 1920 to 1964 he worked at the University of Alberta . He began as a lecturer in Classical Antiquities and was primarily responsible for this area from 1938 until the end of his university career . From 1922 to 1926 he was also the coach of the Golden Bears, the ice hockey team of the University of Alberta, and helped implement the construction of an indoor ice arena in 1927. He was very involved as a member of the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association. From 1938 to 1940 he served as President of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and represented Canada at the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . From 1947 to 1948 he was Vice President of the IIHF and then from 1948 to 1951 its President for three years. In 1973 he was accepted as a member of the Order of Canada due to his services to the educational system and amateur ice hockey in Canada and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta . He was also inducted posthumously into the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame in 1987 and into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
