The song comes from the Edo period and spread from the capital Edo all over the country. It is the origin of the Japanese lullabies and according to Nihon Komoriuta Kyōkai ( NPO 法人 日本 子 守 唄 協会 , NPO hōjin ~ , " NPO Japanese Lullaby Society") there are around 3000 variants of the song nationwide.
In 2007, the Office for Cultural Affairs, in cooperation with the umbrella organization of parent representatives ( 日本 PTA 全国 協議 会 , Nihon PTA Zenkoku Kyōgikai ) put together a selection of 100 songs that are sung by children and parents. The Edo Komoriuta was included in it at number 15.
