Judith Anne Collins (born February 24, 1959 in Te Aroha , New Zealand ) is a politician of the New Zealand National Party . She has been the party leader of her party since July 14, 2020 and thus also leads the opposition in the New Zealand Parliament .

Life

Judith Collins was born in Hamilton on February 24, 1959, the last of six children to Percy and Jessie Collins .

She received her secondary education at Matamata College in Matamata , studied law at the University of Auckland and graduated there successively in 1981 with a Bachelor of Laws , 1984 with a Master of Taxation Studies and 1987 with a Master of Laws .

Professional career

As a lawyer, she took on the presidency of the Auckland District Law Society for one year in 1998 , followed by the position of Vice-President of the New Zealand Law Society from 1999 to 2000. Also in 1998, she took over the positions of director of Dairy Brands Limited and for two years that of the Chairman of Savoy Equities Limited . From 1999 to 2001 she held the post of Director of Housing New Zealand Limited Company, and in the same year she assumed the position of Chair of the Casino Control Authority for three years . Also, Collins announced that they temporarily operate with her husband, a restaurant and with Judith Collins & Associates, Barristers & Solicitors founded his own company.

Time in parliament

Collins won the Clevedon constituency on July 27, 2002 and later the Papakura constituency in November 2009 , which she has held ever since. During her tenure in Parliament, she held various ministerial posts under Prime Ministers John Key and Bill English . In detail these were:

  • from Nov. 2008 to Dec. 2011 - Minister for Veterans' Affairs
  • from December 2011 to August 2014 - Minister for ACC

  • from Dec. 2011 to Aug. 2014 - Minister for Ethnic Affairs
  • from December 2015 to August 2016 - Minister for Police
  • from Dec. 2015 to Aug. 2016 - Minister for Corrections
  • from December 2016 to October 2017 - Minister for Ethnic Communities
  • from December 2016 to October 2017 - Minister for Energy and Resources
  • from December 2016 to October 2017 - Minister for Revenue

Collins is married to David Wong-Tung and has one son.
