The Wanganui Herald was a regional daily newspaper in New Zealand based in Wanganui .

history

The Wanganui Herald first appeared on June 4, 1867 as an evening newspaper under the name Evening Herald . The editor was John Ballance , later Prime Minister of the country, along with his partner AD Willis . Ballance , who only renamed the paper the Wanganui Herald in 1876 , positioned his newspaper as a mouthpiece for liberal ideas in opposition to the Wanganui Chronicle, founded in 1856 .

From 1869 to 1906, the newspaper also published the Weekly Herald , later renamed Yeoman . From 1926 the paper also published a children's newspaper on the inside, something new in New Zealand at that time.

In 1971 the Wanganui Herald came into one hand with the Wanganui Chronicle , but was still published separately from the Chronicle as an evening paper. In 1986 the Wanganui Herald was finally discontinued as a daily newspaper and only published as a community paper under the name Wanganui Midweek .
