Steve Turner (born March 23, 1965 in Seattle ) is an American rock musician and guitarist with the band Mudhoney and is in this capacity one of the pioneers of the so-called Grunge movement .

Musical career

In 1981 he founded the garage band the Limp Richerds with Scott Warner (bass), Dave Middelton (vocals), Charlie Guian (guitar) and Mark Arm (drums) . Furthermore, he played from 1982 together with his school friend Stone Gossard with Ducky Boys and in 1983 he joined Mr. Epp , where Mark Arm worked as a guitarist. After joining Mr. Epp, he founded Spluii Numa with Charlie Guian (guitar), Fufu (bass), Eric Aisen (vocals) and another friend Alex Vincent (drums). Except for Mr. Epp, none of these combos left musical performances for posterity on phonograms.

Since none of these bands promised to get ahead, he joined forces in 1984 with Mark Arm (vocals, guitar), Alex Vincet (drums) and Jeff Ament (bass) from the hardcore band Deranged Diction, who immigrated from Montana, to form Green River . Turner suggested this name in reference to the Green River Killer . Green River, joined in 1985 by Stone Gossard as the second guitarist, soon became, together with Soundgarden, one of the most famous big names in the scene. At the end of 1985 he left Green River due to differing musical opinions and due to school obligations. He also played guitar with the Thorwns ups . When Green River broke up on October 31, 1987, he merged with Mark Arm to form Mudhoney , where he played the lead guitar, with one short exception (July 1999 to January 2001 as bassist).

Musical style

Turner's musical style has its origins in the Stooges , the MC5 and the former Seattle punk band Sonic.

Musical influence

His influence is mainly not shaped by his guitar playing, but rather by his anti-star attitude, which Mark Arm also applies. This behavior was already evident at Green River and he has kept it up to now. Kurt Cobain was taken with this attitude.

Private life

Steve Turner studied anthropology at Western Washington University . He has a son and, in addition to his musical career, runs a mail order business for sound carriers.
