The Rockpalast Nacht was a six-hour concert event that took place from 1977 to 1986 in the Grugahalle in Essen . The rock nights were organized as part of the WDR production Rockpalast and broadcast in full by ARD via Eurovision without additional show elements throughout Europe. Some ARD radio stations also broadcast the concert sound synchronously in stereophony . A total of 17 rock nights took place in ten years. The concept came from Christian Wagner and Peter Rüchel , the moderators were Albrecht Metzger and Alan Bangs .

Usually three or four rock bands performed on Rockpalast night. It was characteristic that relatively unknown artists performed together with internationally known stars such as Peter Gabriel , The Police or The Who . Numerous unknown bands and musicians became known through the rock nights, including ZZ Top and Bryan Adams . Initially, the makers concentrated on classic rock and blues rock . The program was later opened to other styles and experiments were carried out, for example with the performances of the African King Sunny Adé or the salsa musician Rubén Blades . The plan to have Bruce Springsteen perform could not be realized.

The rock nights already achieved cult status at that time and are considered unique in German and European television history. The last Rockpalast night took place in March 1986, among others with the German rock band BAP .
