Career

Early years

Lee came from a musical family. His parents and sister played country music and occasionally performed as a guitar trio. At the age of twelve he learned to play the clarinet and a year later he learned to play the guitar .

At 13, he joined the fan club of Elvis Presley in order to photos of his band guitarist Scotty Moore get hold with which it should occur together later. Lee played in various bands such as The Atomics , Jaymen , Jaybirds and Ivan Jay and the Jaycats , from which the band Ten Years After later emerged. His guitar style was particularly influenced by elements from jazz . In the early 1960s, Lee also took on the vocals . At that time he had already completed a long engagement in the Hamburg Star Club , shortly after the Beatles performed there.

Ten Years After

Alvin Lee became famous with Ten Years After , which received a lot of attention in the rock scene of the time with its energetic blues-rock sound. Her appearance at the Woodstock Festival has become legendary . The concert film shows the fast-paced guitar runs in the ten-minute piece I'm Going Home , as well as the bright red Gibson ES-335 with the peace sign , which became Lee's trademark. In professional circles he was considered the fastest guitarist in the world. In the late 1960s, Lee met Jimi Hendrix a few times , who particularly liked Lee's solo in the song I Can't Keep from Crying and who had something similar in mind. Ten Years After initially existed until 1974.

After several phases of sporadic collaboration, three original bandmates Lees founded a new edition of the group in 2003 with the young guitarist Joe Gooch , which was active until 2013. In 2014 Joe Gooch and Leo Lyons left the group. Marcus Bonfanti (lead guitar) and Colin Hodgkinson (bass) replaced the two.

Alvin Lee with various bands

After his separation from Ten Years After , Lee played under various band names such as Alvin Lee & Company or Ten Years Later . He also played with Mick Taylor and George Harrison , who can also be heard on most of his solo albums. George Harrison was also involved when Lee recorded the album On the Road to Freedom with the American gospel singer Mylon LeFevre in 1973, before his band Ten Years After broke up. Also involved in the recordings were Steve Winwood , Tim Hinkley , Ian Wallace , Ron Wood and Mick Fleetwood .

Late years

Most recently, Lee lived in southern Spain . In 2012 he released the album Still on the road to freedom , the title of which refers to the 1973 album On the road to freedom , his first solo album after Ten Years After .

Lee died on March 6, 2013, as a result of routine surgery.
