Clyde Stubblefield (born April 18, 1943 in Chattanooga , Tennessee , † February 18, 2017 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American drummer .

Life

Clyde Stubblefield grew up in Chattanooga and began playing drums as a child. At first he drummed on all kinds of materials, from tin cans to cardboard boxes. He was best known as a drummer for James Brown , who discovered him in 1965 while performing in Macon and signed him directly. Stubblefield, the genre has radio extent developed and be 20 seconds long drum solo in the piece Funky Drummer is considered one of the most sampled hip-hop - Breaks in music history. It was used by Public Enemy , LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys , among others .

In 1970 he left James Brown's band with other musicians. He moved first to Detroit , then to Madison , where he lived until his death. He played for Ben Sidran for three years . Little was heard from him in the 1980s. In the 1990s he worked on various projects in the jazz and funk area, for example with Phil Upchurch and Pee Wee Ellis . He was also a guest drummer on the first album of Garbage . He also released two solo albums. Now and then he still drummed for The JB's. He had regular appearances on the radio show Whad 'Ya Know by Michael Feldman.

In 2002 a kidney was removed from him. Since then he has suffered from chronic kidney failure and had to undergo dialysis several times a week . According to his own statements, Stubblefield always had money problems, although his famous drum solo was used in more than 1,300 songs by other artists. He was paid for cancer treatment by the musician Prince. In 2011 he was interviewed for the documentary Copyright Criminals . The film addresses the copyright loopholes , as Stubblefield had received little money for his famous drum solo. He was played by Rob Demery in James Brown's biopic Get On Up . Clyde Stubblefield died of kidney failure in February 2017 at the age of 73.

The Rolling Stone listed Stubblefield together with James Brown bandmate Jabo Starks as sixth of the 100 best drummers of all time .
