content

In Spain after the Second World War , the rural population is partly poor and dependent on large landowners . The two sons of a farmer live with their father, stepmother and stepsister in a very simple house and during the day they tend goats for the large landowner who owns both the land and the family home. When wolves kill five goats, the family's existence is threatened because the father is already in debt and cannot compensate for the loss of the goats. At the suggestion of his wife, to which he is initially negative, he leaves his youngest son to the landowner so that he can use his labor. Marcos, who is of primary school age, is brought to the mountains of the Sierra Morena with no infrastructure , where he is supposed to support the goatherd Atanasio. Don Ceferino, the man who brought him there, is also looking for the gang of resistance fighter Ballila, who withdrew to this region after the war and are held responsible for numerous crimes, although they are difficult to pin down. Arriving at the goatherd Atanasio, who lives in a cave, Marcos quickly becomes friends with him and learns from him how to catch birds and wild rabbits in nature by setting traps or using a ferret . In addition, he is fascinated by the diversity of nature and in particular succeeds in establishing an emerging relationship with a wolf cub. After Ballila's resistance group visits them briefly, Marcos learns that Ballila is the goatherd's son. Soon after, numerous shots are fired, whereupon Atanasio suspects that the resistance fighters have been caught.

When Atanasio fell ill, Marcos took care of him, but couldn't prevent him from dying. Now left to his own devices, the boy finds it difficult to survive at first because, despite his acquired knowledge, he does not really want to succeed in hunting. Pieces of meat that the wolf, with whom his relationship has deepened, gives him from the wolves' prey are helpful. Gradually, however, Marcos is also becoming more successful in hunting and even acquiring additional hunting techniques. When the men of the large landowner came to pick up the goats in autumn, they initially only found the empty cave, which was apparently still inhabited due to the fire. But they also discover unmistakable signs of Atanasio's death. Marcos, who is hiding from them, is beyond their reach, which is why they start their way back with the goats without the boy. A short time later, however, Ceferino surprised Marcos, who tried to rekindle the almost extinguished fire. Together with the boy he starts the way back. On the way, however, they are attacked by a pack of wolves, which allows Marcos to escape.

In the following years, the boy succeeds in further strengthening his relationship with the wolf, and he not only exchanges prey or parts of prey with this wolf, but also with birds of prey. Years later, Marcos is now a young man, men of the Guardia Civil appear near the cave, who are chasing Ballila, which has still not been captured, and wound him with a shot in the leg. Marcos attracts the police officers' attention and thus distracts them from Ballila. However, he fails to get rid of his pursuers, and so they catch him. He is threatened with a return to civilization, which is why he is once again looking for an escape route. This time, however, he does not manage to escape and it is time to say goodbye to the way of life that has become dear to him. Even in old age, however, he is always drawn back to nature and the place where he developed from child to man.
