Olav Riste

Olav Riste (born April 11, 1933 in Volda ; † July 21, 2015 ) was a Norwegian historian .

Riste earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Oslo with the dissertation published in 1965 The Neutral Allied , in which he presented Norway's position in the First World War . From 1980 to 1996 he was director of the Norwegian Institute for Defense Studies . He later held the position of research director of this institution and from 1980 a teaching position at the University of Bergen . From 1997 Riste also taught at the University of Oslo. The focus of his research was in the field of international and national security and military history . Riste was editor of the Scandinavian Journal of History from 1976 to 1981 .

Riste was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences . In 2003 he was awarded the Order of Saint Olav with the rank of first class knight.

The political scientist Leopoldo Nuti described Riste as "one of the most respected and leading historians of international relations in Western Europe".
