The independent monthly magazine Herder Korrespondenz , published by the Freiburg publishing house Herder , has been reporting on current developments in church , religion and society since 1946 . In addition to leading articles , comments and other reports by the editorial team, each issue contains an interview as well as analyzes and specialist articles by scientists, journalists and experts.

History and program

Karlheinz Schmidthüs founded Herder Korrespondenz in 1946. He remained its publisher and editor-in-chief until his death in 1972. The publication was originally to be called "Orbis Catholicus" and was intended to replace the Catholic magazines banned by the National Socialists . But after the end of the war, the French occupation authorities did not approve the title or the concept. At least she allowed a correspondence sheet with information for the church press. This is how the name Herder Korrespondenz came about .

In the first few years, the aim of the magazine was above all to bring German Catholics back to the world church public after years of isolation during the Second World War . In addition to ecclesiastical-religious and political-social reporting, prints of papal and other ecclesiastical texts were an integral part of Herder's correspondence during this period . From 1948 to 1967 the magazine therefore also had the subtitle "Orbis Catholicus".

Alongside information and documentation, comments and statements appeared in the 1960s . Influenced by the Second Vatican Council , an English edition of the Herder Correspondence, the “Herder Correspondence”, was published - but only from 1964 to 1969. At times (1952–1967) there was even a separate Austrian edition, the content of which, however, was congruent with the German .

The Herder correspondence evolved since its creation to a - even beyond the German-speaking world beyond - respected voice in the discussion within the church and in the dialogue between the Church and society. In addition to the monthly editions, the Herder Korrespondenz series contains special themed issues in which current ecclesiastical and social issues and developments are comprehensively presented. With the additional digital service Herder Korrespondenz e-Dossier , the editors offer older and newer articles from the magazine grouped thematically as background and research material in the form of PDF files. Herder Korrespondenz online also delivers a large part of the program , where all articles published since 2000 can be viewed online and the contents of the print edition are available 2-3 days earlier.
